Where is Hanul Gabroveni in Bucharest Old Town?

Hanul Gabroveni stands in Bucharest’s Historic Centre, with addresses on both Strada Lipscani and Strada Gabroveni. Use Strada Lipscani 84–90 as the venue address, or look for the corresponding entrance at Strada Gabroveni 50–53. It can fit into a first-day walk through Bucharest Old Town.

Strada Lipscani is pedestrian-only, so cars are not permitted on that street. ARCUB recommends public or other alternative transport; Piața Unirii is the destination it gives for public transport, and it identifies Piața Unirii as the nearest metro station. Buses serving the area include routes 104, 116, 117, 123, 124, 312, 313, 232, 361 and 783.

There are no parking spaces at Hanul Gabroveni. ARCUB identifies the nearest parking as near Kulturhaus on Strada Jacques Elias, so plan for a walk from there rather than expecting to park at the venue.

What does Hanul Gabroveni’s history reveal?

What does Hanul Gabroveni’s history reveal?

Hanul Gabroveni’s history reflects how Bucharest’s Old Town buildings have adapted to changing commercial and cultural life. ARCUB records the inn’s first mention in documents in 1739. After the Great Fire of Bucharest in 1847 destroyed much of the city, including the building, the inn was rebuilt.

In 1874, Solomon Ascher acquired it and transformed it into a commercial passage. The building gained a storey and its façade was renovated. It was nationalized in 1955 and passed to CENTROCOOP; another fire affected it in 1999.

The building came under ARCUB administration in 2006. Restoration and consolidation followed from 2009 to 2014, and Hanul Gabroveni reopened in 2014 as ARCUB’s headquarters and a cultural venue. During the work, more than 300,000 bricks in walls over 200 years old were individually replaced, and the gate’s cast-metal ornaments were recreated.

What can you see and do at the venue?

What can you see and do at the venue?

Hanul Gabroveni now brings performances, exhibitions, workshops and other events into a historic building. ARCUB describes a main performance hall with 160 seats, a studio hall, an atelier hall, exhibition rooms and conference spaces. The listed spaces also include several halls, a foyer, a café, a bookshop and Gabroveni Creativ.

The venue covers more than 1,431 square metres and can receive over 1,000 visitors. That scale means the building is more than a preserved exterior: its rooms accommodate a varied cultural programme. Look for a specific event before planning your visit, since public access and opening arrangements may depend on the programme.

On days with performances in an ARCUB hall, the box office opens one hour before the event. These are office and box-office schedules, not a guarantee that every part of the venue is open for general visits.

Opening hours

  • Monday to Friday: 9:00–17:00
  • Saturday and Sunday: closed

Last checked November 2026. Hours can change on holidays and for special events.

Before you go: Event schedules and access arrangements can vary, so check the official site before you go. For accessibility, ARCUB states that disabled visitors can receive free admission to its events with an advance reservation and presentation of a disability certificate and identity document.

How can you fit Hanul Gabroveni into an Old Town walk?

How can you fit Hanul Gabroveni into an Old Town walk?

Start by locating the entrance on Strada Lipscani or Strada Gabroveni, then take time to notice the building’s gate and exterior before moving on through the pedestrian streets.

If you have booked an event, check its access details first; otherwise, treat a visit as dependent on the venue’s public programme rather than assuming the halls are open for casual entry. A museum-focused detour can include Palatul Suțu and the Bucharest Municipal Museum.

Palatul Suțu is another option for a museum-focused Old Town itinerary.

Hanul Gabroveni works naturally as one stop among Bucharest Old Town sights. You can build a broader route around the area’s historic streets and cultural landmarks, including Stavropoleos Monastery. Keep the route flexible if your main purpose is an ARCUB event, since the performance schedule can shape when you can enter.
